In this article, we will talk about digital marketing, traditional marketing, technology, and related topics. Before dive into it, I will tell you a story between a cat and a mouse.
Let’s get started!
I will take you back to our elementary school times where we were subject to hearing stories from teachers. One of these stories is that we all know the story behind a cat and a mouse that ended up badly. However, there are many types of this scenario out there and now let me tell you one of them.
The Cat and The Mouse

A cat and a mouse wanted to live together and keep the house as a partnership. They prepared for winter by buying a pot of fat, and because they had no safer spot for it, they placed it under the altar in the church until such time that they would need it.
However, one day the cat took a longing for it and approached the mouse. “Listen, little mouse, a cousin of mine has invited me to serve as godfather. She has given birth to a brown and white spotted little son, and I am supposed to carry him to his baptism. Is it all right for me to leave you home alone with the housework today?”
“Go ahead,” said the mouse, “and if they serve you something good, also think of me. I would certainly welcome a drop of yummy red christening wine.” But the cat went directly to the church and ate the top off the fat and then went strolling about the town and did not return home until evening.
“You must have had a good time,” said the mouse. “What name did they give the child?”
“Top-Off,” answered the cat.
“Top-Off? That’s a strange name, one that I’ve not yet heard.”
Soon the cat took another longing, went to the mouse, and said, “I’ve asked to serve as godfather once again. The child has a white ring around its body. I can’t say no. You’ll have to do me a favour and take care of the house by yourself today.”
The mouse agreed, and the cat went and ate up half the fat. When returned home, the mouse asked, “What name did this godchild receive?”
“Half-Gone.”
“Half-Gone? What are you telling me? I’ve never heard that name.
Now the cat could not take his mind off the pot of fat. “I have been invited to serve as godfather for the third time,” he said. “The child is black and has white paws, but not another white hair on his entire body. That only happens once in a few years. You will let me go, won’t you?”
“Top-Off, Half-Gone,” said the mouse. “Those names are so curious that it makes me a bit suspicious, but go ahead.”
The mouse took care of the house and cleaned up everything, while the cat finished off the pot of fat. Round and full, she did not return until nighttime.
“What is the third child’s name?”
“All-Gone.”
“All-Gone! That is a worrisome name!” said the mouse. “All-Gone. Just what does this mean? I’ve never seen that name in print,” and she shook her head and went to bed.
No one invited the cat to serve as godfather a fourth time. Winter soon came, and when they could no longer find anything to eat outside, the mouse said to the cat, “Let’s get the provisions that we’ve hidden in the church under the altar.” They went there, but the pot was empty.
“Now I see!” said the mouse. “You came here when you said you were invited to be a godfather. First came Top-Off, then it was Half-Gone, and then…”
“Be still,” said the cat. “I’ll eat you up if you say another word.”
“All-Gone” was already in the poor mouse’s mouth, and she had scarcely said it before the cat jumped on her and…

Okey, well…that was a good story
But, what does it have to do with digital marketing and traditional marketing?
In order to find an answer to that question, let’s integrate this story into the fight that has been going on between Digital Marketing and Traditional Marketing. However, let us first get to the specifics and define the differences between digital marketing and traditional marketing.
Digital Marketing and Traditional Marketing
To put it simply.
Digital Marketing is the advertisement of brands to connect with potential customers using the internet and other forms of digital communication.
Common digital marketing channels include:
- Social media (Facebook, Instagram etc)
- Website
- Content marketing
- Affiliate marketing
- Inbound marketing
- Email marketing
- PPC (pay per click
- SEM (Search engine marketing)
- Email campaigns
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
On the other hand, traditional marketing includes marketing channels that can be used without the internet. These are the channels that have been around for decades and generally used to communicate with customers.
Common traditional marketing channels include:
- Outdoor (Billboards, bus/taxi wraps, posters, etc)
- Broadcasting (TV, Radio commercials, etc)
- Print (Magazines, newspapers, etc)
- Telemarketing (Phone, text message)
- Directly mailed postcards, coupons, and informational packets
- Window display and signs
As you can see, the main difference between digital and traditional marketing is the way that their audience faces a marketing message. While traditional marketing uses tools like magazines, billboards, and newspapers, digital marketing uses tools, such as social media or websites.
I think it is enough to talk about this boring information which you can find easily in any marketing books. Now, it is the right time to expand the battlefield by adding the third soldier- Technology.
Surprised you?
Stay around…it is getting hot!
Relationship Between Technology and Digital Marketing
Technology has visited every aspect of our lives, from our communication way to the shop. Marketing has become primarily digital art. No matter what you are selling or buying, technology will improve the quality of your marketing result and, eventually, help you create more leads.
If this is the fact, let’s get further a bit.
The development of digital marketing is inseparable from technology development. We have mentioned that it is the component of marketing that uses the internet and online-based digital technologies to promote products and services to customers.
Its development during the 1990s and 2000s changed the way businesses and brands use technology for marketing. As digital platforms became increasingly engaged in marketing plans and everyday life, and as people increasingly use digital devices instead of visiting physical shops, digital marketing campaigns have become prevalent.
Until the development of the internet in the 1990 and 2000s, traditional marketing was pretty much the only type of marketing. Of course, traditional marketing doesn’t mean it is old-fashioned. Traditional marketing still plays a vital role in some people’s life. However, the crucial thing is that we have to understand digital marketing is always 10 steps ahead of traditional marketing.
A few weeks ago, I searched “marketing internship” just for fun and I must admit I was shocked because I had just found a few internships as a result.
Even though I knew that marketing professors in my school keep telling us that the traditional means of advertising are dying, the fact that there are thousands of articles on this topic still surprised me.
The golden era of marketing is over?
Both digital marketing and traditional marketing have their benefits and downfalls, but the key is understanding your specific marketing needs, keeping up with developments and understanding your target audience.
Conclusion
Digital marketing is probably the best choice for most. If you want to communicate with a particular group of people, wherever they may be, while keeping costs low, go with digital marketing. Doing so will also allow you to collect precious information on your audience quickly so that you can build even more effective marketing campaigns.
However, there is still a place for traditional marketing. If you want to connect with an older audience or a local audience, traditional marketing methods might be more effective and stand out better than digital marketing methods.
We have had a great way until here.
But, still there is a question in my mind…
If digital marketing is eating traditional marketing then who is going to eat digital marketing?
Will digital marketing die one day?
