I love learning about ways to best market and gain exposure for businesses, and share my passion for all things digital media.
It can be overwhelming as a start-up entrepreneur running your own business, with the fear of failure or if anyone will be interested in your products or services. Digital Marketing is quite a new practice and can be overwhelming, so here I will list some tips for you to get started on your digital marketing journey.
1. Determine your audience
Don’t make the mistake of assuming everyone in the world wants or needs your products or services. Find out who your target market is for what you are selling. It could be a good start to determine who your target audience isn’t. Analyse your competitors and determine who their target audience is. Google Analytics is also a powerful tool to track your results and see who is interested in your start-up business. It could also be a good idea to conduct market research.
2. Create a website
Before you create a social media presence it’s important to first create a website to begin building your brand and gaining online presence. It’s also where you will refer customers to in your social media posts. A website is very important as it is an essential tool for start-up businesses to establish their credibility and develop trust with customers. A website portrays your professionalism and is a place for customers to learn more about you and your business, what you provide and a form of contact.
3. Assuming you have your business name and logo, create your social media presence.
Start by creating a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin, you may wish to create a YouTube channel or branch out to other social media channels of your choosing. This is the first step to creating a digital media presence and to get your brand noticed. Not all social media channels may be suited to all types of businesses, this may be something you as a business owner needs to decide. Having a social media presence builds awareness, builds trust, makes you authentic, encourages more engagement and increases support.
4. If you don’t have a logo already, create one or get someone else to create one.
A logo is very integral to creating a unique brand allowing potential consumers to easily identify your business. It is the perfect way to use creative design to summarise your products or services. So don’t skip this step as it is important for you and your consumers, just like it is important to create a business name.
5. Optimise your content for Search Engines.
To begin, carry out keyword search to improve your visibility on search engines. By doing this, you can see the words your potential consumers are most often using when searching on the internet, particularly when shopping. You can also consider optimising your business for local search if you are a small local business.
Try using more than one keyword for SEO, this will give you a better understanding and better chance at improving your SEO, the more words you can include, the better.
6. Set up a system so you can track your results.
It is important for any brand to track their results so they can know if they need to improve or not or know what areas can be better worked on. But this is most important for a business just starting out as this is the most critical stage for a business to grow and develop a customer base. For example, you can do this using Heropost. Heropost is a website you can use to automatically post social media posts at whatever time you choose to schedule. You can use this website to track the success rate of your social media posts on each platform, it makes life a lot easier when you can see figures on a screen. Social media presence is very important to gaining business success.
These are just a few tips to get you started on your digital marketing journey as a start-up company, once you get started with these tips you have a solid foundation for your business to gain the exposure you need. Building a website and creating social media platforms are the first most important steps to establishing your start-up business. Then it is important to track your results, and if you are not getting the results you want or need, continue to improve your digital marketing strategies accordingly. SEO is also another great way to increase exposure, as explored in this article. How will you use digital media and marketing to your advantage in your start-up business venture?
